What are the steps to
becoming a member?
We know that choosing a
home and a community is one of the biggest decisions you will make
in life, so we've developed a process which helps explain and
explore cohousing, our community, and its members. The "road to
membership" has several steps to help you decide if life at Newberry
Place is right for you.
1 - Schedule a meeting and tour - or join us at one of our events
(check the calendar).
You'll learn more
about Newberry Place and cohousing in
general. You'll also meet some of the members of our group, see the site and
homes, learn more about the neighborhood, and have your questions
answered by the people who are helped create this unique community.
Email us to schedule
your tour, or call
member Steve Faber at 616-456-0485.
2 - Research, read, and
visit a cohousing community if you can. There are several in
Ann Arbor
which offer tours
(check the links page). The Cohousing
Association of the United States is also a
great resource for information, and has compiled a list of
Frequently Asked Questions on their
website,
cohousing.org.
3 - Attend a Member
Meeting. These meetings are open to anyone who wants to
seriously explore the option of living at Newberry Place. By attending
a Member Meeting, you'll have the opportunity to observe how our community decisions are made
and ask questions.
4 - Ask questions.
The members of Newberry Place welcome your questions and curiosity.
Attending meetings is a great way to
learn more about us and about cohousing, but you can also contact us
by email here, or make
an appointment to have your questions answered over a cup of
coffee.
5 - Become an Associate
Member by paying $120 and putting your name on the waiting list
for a home. You'll be put in contact with a current member or member family to help familiarize you with our group and what it
means to live at Newberry Place.
6 - Become an Equity
Member by paying $6,000 and choosing your new home (your $6,000
goes directly toward the purchase of your home as part of the down
payment). You'll then
be a full voting member of
Newberry Place, and can begin life as a cohouser with your fellow
Newberry Place neighbors!
